One Year Later

Description

Shifting gears once more, here's also something I've never done before. I was down on the gulf coast last week and got to see firsthand the awe inspiring destruction leftover from Hurricane Katrina, one year later. As you drive along the coast, there are series of empty lots, where nothing but bare foundations remain, where gigantic, old, tidewater and antebellum-style houses used to reside. If you drive a few blocks in, sometimes you'll still see a boat or a vehicle, plenty of leftover debris off-road, maybe a bath tub or two, blue tarps on roofs, plenty of anti-State Farm statements spray painted on plywood scraps...

I tried to capture the general feeling that I got while taking my personal survey of the coast. There was plenty of repair in evidence if you looked, though by and large, lots remianed empty, windows remained boarded up, structures remained tattered and untouched. It seemed like only the largest buildings were being restored, likely because the largest corporations are the only people on the coast who can afford to rebuild without the help of the insurance companies.

I know this isn't major fav material, but I thought it was interesting to witness and figured I'd share.

Very strong capture of Biloxi. You managed to capture exactly how most of us feel when we drive down the beach. Some of us still cry...
