Mesa Plantlife by Rhavethstine Mesa Plantlife by Rhavethstine
Went on a Canyon trip with a friend from California over the weekend. Was his first canyon trip. Hope it wasn't disappointing! :) I certainly had fun getting back into the groove of things and appreciated the opportunity to share the experience with others.

Is it me or is this tilted to the right?
Anyway, the light is amazing. Great exposure for both highlights and shadows.

Heh, it's not you. :) The rock layers in this area of the Grand Canyon are actually tilted to the east. Makes for a disorienting photo.

Amazing canyon photo ;) The colours at the top of the cliffs looks awesome, and you didn't forgot the foreground, which is very good to avoid the picture being classic

I'm always completely blown away by the absolutely gorgeous colors you capture. It makes me want to pitch a tent and live out there like a hermit. ^_^

Yep. After the crazy winter we had, there are wild flowers and green things all over the place at the moment. It's pretty awesome. :)

I like the colors, and especially the variety of textures (the rocks in the background, the ones in the foreground, the plants...). As noted by Photogrifos, it does seem slanted, but since the rocks have different dips, not sure what to do about it :/ I think the peaks on the left side of the photo emphasize the appearance of the slant, so maybe taking it at an angle a bit off horizontal would be good, just to please the eyes a bit more. Well, the eyes of someone like me who likes to adjust things that appear off kilter ;) That's just being nitpicky though - it is Beautiful!

Thanks. Yeah, I agree I could stand to play with rotation a little bit. It's tough to get it right out there, for the reasons you pointed out. :D

I like the focus on the cactus and agave in the foreground with the expanse of the canyon as a background. Though the depths of the canyon are in deep shadow there is still enough of the detail to depict it's depth and size. Great shot.

Great composition James, and you've got great light. But is it a little bit tilted or my eyes are playing tricks on me? Great photo anyway. :+fav:

Hehe, it's really hard to tell in this area of the Canyon. There are so many different angles in the strata, especially on the horizon line, where the majority of layers dip to the east. Regardless, from a purely aesthetic point of view, a slight rotation might make it less jarring to look at.

I think the lower strata are dipping at a different angle than the upper strata...the photo is more in line with the upper rocks, but the lower ones stand out more - I noticed this, too :)

ahhh...I can see three of my old campsites.
Wotan seems a bit compressed.
But, maybe my eyes are playing tricks.
Old age, perhaps :(

Hehe, just three? :D Awesome, man. Compression might come from the wide angle lens.

Actually 4, if you count Cape Final
up there on the North Rim somewhere.
Is there any chance the camera wasn't 100% level?
This is splitting hairs, of course,
yet my eye is continually drawn to Wotan.
Maybe my memory has simply faded.
Did you go into the cave again?

It's quite possible it was angled forward a bit. Not all that sure. I usually focus all my energy on making sure the horizontal plane is level. Don't have the luxury of a tilt-shift lens or a film plane that I can manipulate. :D

Yes, I hit up the cave again. Took them on a tour to the back rooms where you really have to start crawling through some sketchy caved-in sections and then we turned around. Went about 3/4ths of the way to the "end." It was the first time I encountered moisture in the cave. Usually it's bone dry. Must have been from the recent rain. But it was so cool... There were actually drops dripping from the stalactites! It was awesome.

Great composition and lighting. Crisp focus. Saturated color. Good foreground, middle ground, and background interest. Pleasant division of the image space by the lines and focal points. Good work!

Your quite welcome...I have not had a chance to get out for the wildflowers unfortunately, I know there's a few places where they have sprung up more than others. I was down at saguaro national park last week and saw quite a bit, but nothing like carpets.
